VPC and Rep. Conyers Call for FTC Investigation Into the Marketing of Sniper Rifles.
Author/s:
Issue: Oct 9, 2002

WASHINGTON -- The Violence Policy Center (VPC) will join Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, in a press conference Thursday, October 10, 2002 at12 Noon, calling for an FTC investigation into the marketing of sniper rifles to criminals.

Representative Conyers issued the following statement in advance of the press conference:

"If we have learned anything from the recent outbreak of shootings in Maryland hopefully we have learned that we desperately need to keep sniper rifles off of the streets and out of the hands of criminals. The mass marketing of military and military style rifles in what appears to intentionally appeal to law breakers is an alarming and deadly trend that has become all to common in our society.

The accuracy, range and power of these weapons presents a grave danger if used by a determined criminal, terrorist or a deranged gunman, as evidenced by the shootings in Maryland. Unfortunately, these real hazards appear to be of little, if any, concern to a few bad apples in the firearms industry.

It is imperative that we limit the access to these types of weapons to criminals, not encourage it. I urge the FTC to look long and hard into this problem."
